The infamous poo pyramid usually is the culprit in a black water tank draining issue. I built a clear black tank simulator so i can see exactly what happens inside the rv black tank when you dump. The grey tank's rear vent goes down toward the road.

That will tell you if the vent was working since it will have all the vent it needs with the open toilet. The gray tank odor is very bad in rv's.

If you are talking about it being in the rear wall, it won't be. Picture of the gray water tank shows the shower water drain entering at center of tank at the bottom and the sink drain at the bottom back.

Try dumping the tank and then adding maybe 20 gallons of water back into it. Either method will prevent or drastically reduce water spillage.

#7 · jun 22, 2007. The two basic fixes are to either rerun the vent uphill (for example, to where the gravity fill entrance is), or to make a racetrack of tubing around the top of the tank before exiting downwards.

On my rig there are 3 holding tanks; The poo tank's rear vent goes up through a stainless steel roof pipe, and its front vent connects to the grey tank's front vent;

I Have Found Most Of The Time It Is The Gray Tank System Causing The Odor.

The rv plumbing vent is a pipe. It's a heck of a way to do plumbing, but i guess it's cheap and sort. Vents should also be plumbed to opposite sides of the vessel, enabling cross flow, in a direct line with as few bends and dips as possible.
